Teen Charged In Fatal Shooting At Weekend Party

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A 19-year-old man was charged with murder Monday for fatally shooting another teenager at a party in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood early Sunday.

A second person involved in the crime was charged on a weapon violation.

Miguel Huerta, of the 1700 block of North Rockwell Street, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

According to police, Huerta arrived at a party in the 1700 block of West Erie Street just after 2 a.m. Sunday when a "little bit of a brawl,'' broke out and he shot 18-year-old Alfredo Perez.

Perez was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 2:55 a.m., a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

After the shooting, witnesses gave a description of the vehicle Huerta fled the scene in, and pulled the vehicle over, Mirabelli said.

A second individual inside the vehicle, Fernando Lagunas, 17, of the 800 block of North Pine Avenue, was taken into custody and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, Mirabelli said.

The shooting is considered gang-related, according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks.
Huerta is scheduled to appear for a noon bond hearing in Violence Court (Br.66) Tuesday.
