Teacher Accused Of Student Sex Quit In December

Sarah Tolzien Is Charged With Sex With 16-Year-Old Boy

MATTESON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Rich South High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a male student resigned Dec. 2, a day after being placed on administrative leave, the school district superintendent said Thursday.

Sarah Tolzien, 24, of Arlington Heights, is charged with felony sexual assault for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old Matteson boy twice in November. Tolzien, a language arts teacher, also coached the boys varsity cross country team, and the boy was a member of the team, police said.

Rich Township High School District 227 Supt. Howard Hunigan on Thursday called the incident unfortunate but rare.

"It's a sad situation; it's something we don't deal with on a regular basis, I can assure you," he said. "It's very rare and very regrettable."

Hunigan said district officials and police believe no other student at the Richton Park school was involved sexually with Tolzien.

The boy's mother declined to comment Thursday. Tolzien could not be reached for comment.

The charges came Tuesday after a lengthy investigation that began after the mother discovered text messages on her son's cell phone between him and Tolzien that were sexually suggestive, police said. They said the sexual encounters occurred Nov. 14 and 17 when Tolzien drove the boy home from school.

The boy initially denied the sexual relationship but later confirmed it, Matteson police said. They said Tolzien admitted that the two had exchanged the text messages but denied having sex with the boy.
