An April chill may have settled over the area for the first few weeks of June, but not anymore. Hot and humid conditions on Tuesday have prompted a heat advisory for the Chicago area.
A ridge of high pressure is settling over much of the Midwest on Tuesday and Wednesday, causing a hot air mass to drive temperatures into the high 80s and low 90s, according to the National Weather Service.
The dew point temperatures are in the upper 60s to about 70, which indicates an extremely moist airmass. In other words, prepare to get sweaty if you're walking outside.
The high temperatures for the day are expected to hit 84 in Kenosha and Waukegan, 92 in St. Charles, 94 in DeKalb, and 92 in Peru, Ill. Temperatures will be cooler by the lake, but well into the 80s nonetheless.
Heat indices for the day are forecast at 100 to 105 degrees, CBS 2's Ed Curran reports.
Because of all this, a heat advisory is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. for a broad area of the Midwest, including the entire state of Illinois.
Also affected are the entire state of Missouri, all but one county in Iowa, southern Wisconsin, parts of western Indiana, southern Minnesota, and eastern Kansas and Nebraska.
And the heat will be hard to escape. The heat advisory zone extends deep into the south unbroken, through western Kentucky and Tennessee and eastern Arkansas to cover the entire state of Mississippi and part of Louisiana, including New Orleans.
A heat advisory means a period of hot temperatures. You are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, keep out of the sun, and watch over relatives and neighbors.
The forecast high in Chicago for Wednesday is even hotter, at 93 degrees. The highs are above 80 for the rest of the week.
