Restaurant Damaged By 'Super Heavy Firework'

Firework Blows Tiles Off Ceiling, Sends Bulletproof Glass Into Fryer

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A man lit a "super heavy firework" inside a fast food restaurant, blowing tiles off the ceiling early Wednesday in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

Four people were inside, but no one was hurt.

A man walked inside a fast food or sub sandwich restaurant at 3701 W. 16th St. about 1:05 a.m. and put a lit "super heavy firework" on the counter, according to Ogden District police, which said the firework was bigger than an M-80.

There were about four people inside the restaurant when it exploded, blowing tiles off the ceiling and bulletproof glass into the fryer, police said.

The man ran away after lighting the firework, police said. The man was not in police custody at 4 a.m.
