CPS Student Shot Dead During Basketball Game
Juan Casarez Was Killed, Another Teen Was Wounded
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A 14-year-old Chicago Public Schools student died early Friday after he was shot and another teen wounded during a basketball game Thursday night in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Juan Casarez, 14, of the 5200 block of South Wood Street, was shot at 1745 W. 50th St. and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County at 12:58 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond said Casarez was an eighth grade student at Richard Milburn Alternative High School, at 545 E. Oakwood Blvd.
About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, police said Casarez and another 14-year-old boy were playing basketball when the ball rolled towards the alley. As the boys went to retrieve the ball, two unidentified men in their 20s began shooting, striking both boys, police said.
The shooting happened near Cornell Square Park, 1809 W. 50th St.
The other boy is in good condition at Stroger Hospital with a graze wound, police said Friday morning. Both boys were driven to the hospital by a friend.
Authorities said Casarez suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday, the medical examiner's office said.
Bond said crisis counselors will be sent to the school and will also be available for family.
Casarez is the 33rd CPS student to die from violence this school year.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating, but nobody is in custody Friday morning.
