Cameras To Be Mounted On Street Sweepers

Motorists Who Don't Move Cars For Street Cleaning Will Be Photographed

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Mayor Richard M. Daley announced Wednesday that video cameras will be mounted on city street sweepers, in order to snap pictures of parking violators.

The mayor announced the plan at a City Council meeting.

The city bans parking for periods of up to 7 hours on both residential and commercial streets for cleaning. Cardboard signs are placed on lamp posts and trees to notify vehicle owners.

Some neighborhoods also have permanent signs announcing a parking ban for street cleaning on specific days each month.

Currently, police or Revenue Department employees traveling separately from the street sweeper write parking tickets for those who violate the ban.

Under the new plan, street sweepers will photograph the illegally parked cars themselves.
