Man Charged With Savagely Murdering Woman

Motive For Bludgeoning, Strangulation Unknown

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man has been charged with murder in the strangulation and bludgeoning of a woman found dead in a South Side alley late Sunday.

Lee McCorker, 42, of the 6100 block of South Carpenter Street, was charged with murder early Tuesday, according to a release from police News Affairs. McCorker is expected to appear later Tuesday at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, 2600 S. California Ave., for a bond hearing in Violence Court (Br. 66).

McCorker, whose relationship to the 38-year-old female victim whose name was Donald Pickett, is unknown, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti. The murder occurred about 10:35 p.m. Sunday, Ursitti said.

Police received a 911 call and found the woman's body lying in an alley at 8808 S. Commercial Ave., according to a South Chicago District police sergeant. The alley is located between South Commercial and South Exchange avenues.

Pickett, who was fully clothed and did not appear to have been sexually assaulted or robbed, was found bleeding from the head, according to the sergeant.

A weapon was not recovered but it appeared she was hit in the back of the head with a blunt instrument, according to the sergeant, who said the woman was allegedly a local prostitute.

An autopsy Monday found that Pickett had been strangled and also suffered head injuries from an assault, the medical examiner's office said. Her death has been ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office, which is using 8807 S. Exchange Ave. as the location where the body was found.

A witness saw a man who "frequents the area,'' running from the scene with "blood all over him,'' shortly after the incident, according to the sergeant, who said early Monday police "have a name."

Police did not immediately release a possible motive for the murder.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
