Police shot and critically wounded a man with an "extensive criminal background" who used a crutch as a "deadly weapon" in an attack on a west suburban officer early Thursday, police said.
At 1:38 a.m., Forest View police responded to the 3rd Down at 4839 Central Ave. in an unincorporated area near Stickney for a disturbance and possible bar fight, Chief Larry Brouk said.
The responding officer was told there might be a fight in an alley behind the bar. After driving through a parking lot adjacent to the bar, the officer found a man carrying or walking with a crutch, Brouk said.
The officer exited the squad car and tried to talk to the man, who responded by attacking the officer, Brouk said.
"He ordered the individual to stop, and he turned and then attacked our officer. He charged at our officer using the crutch as a deadly weapon," Brouk said.
The officer told the man several times to put the crutch down, but the man refused. The officer "had no alternative" but to shoot, Brouk said. The officer fired at least one shot from a service weapon and struck the man.
The chief said the attacker, 23, was in critical condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood as of Thursday morning.
Brouk did not know why the man, who has an "extensive criminal background," had a crutch.
The officer was not injured and the chief was not sure whether there were witnesses, according to Brouk, who did not think the man was armed.
The bar is in Cook County Sheriff's police jurisdiction, but Forest View police responded because of the close proximity, according to sheriff's police spokesman Bill Cunningham, who said the closest sheriff's deputies were three miles away.
Sheriff's police initially received the 911 call about an unwanted suspect at the bar creating a disturbance, he said.
The shooting is under investigation by the public integrity unit of the sheriff's department, Cunningham said.
