Cougar Scare Closes Park In Stickney
No Substantiated Cougar Sightings In Near Southwest Suburb
STICKNEY, Ill. (CBS) ―
Reports of cougar sightings have prompted police in southwest suburban Stickney to close the Veterans Memorial Park as a precaution.
The park, located along Ridgeland Avenue between 39th and 43rd streets, has been closed indefinitely.
Police have posted signs and animal control has been inspecting the scene every day.
Officials say the closure is a precaution and they are not certain if a cougar is in the park; an animal about which someone called 911 last night turned out to be a deer, police said.
All sightings have been on the grounds of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District facility that borders the park, police said.
The cougar sightings in Stickney are among several that have been reported after a cougar was spotted in the city's Roscoe Village neighborhood last month and shot dead by police. But other sightings have not been substantiated.
