Motorist Cited In Crash That Caused Tanker Spill

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Traffic citations were issued to the driver of a car involved in an accident that led to 65 gallons of gasoline being spilled onto the Stevenson Expressway on Friday afternoon.

A portion of the Stevenson (I-55) was temporarily shut down in both directions near Pulaski Road as fire crews worked to clear up the spill.

The accident, involving a tanker truck and a car, happened about 1:15 p.m. on the northbound ramp of the Stevenson at Pulaski, according to Illinois State Police.

Fire crews shut down the Pulaski ramp onto the northbound Stevenson to clean up 65 gallons of the spill, according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight.

State Police Trooper Mui said the flammable liquid was gasoline.

The driver of the car was issued citations for improper overtaking on the right and for disobeying a traffic control device, according to state police, who initially said the truck driver was cited. The accident occurred at the top of the ramp near a traffic light.

Knight said a Level II HazMat response was called to clear up the spill. No one was injured.
