A Look At Projects Vanished Adventurer Left Behind

Chicagoan Steve Fossett Had A Number Of Record-Breaking Travels In The Works

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago adventurer Steve Fossett disappeared two months ago in the desert, and may never be found. His wife recently filed papers to have him declared dead.

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports on the big plans Fossett had for the future at the time he vanished.

Fossett was working on an 800-mile-an-hour rocket-car when he disappeared. He hoped to break the 10-year land speed record in the jet-propelled vehicle.

That record would have been added to more than 100 world records, including a non-stop round-the-world flight in what amounted to a flying fuel tank -- the Global Flyer.

If Fossett was still alive, he'd still be trying to go faster, deeper, higher, farther. As he said, years ago, "I'm not in this for the thrills. I'm in it for the accomplishments."

Fossett wanted to smash a 40-year-old record in a submarine that was being tested for a dive of more than 35,000 feet into the deepest part of the ocean: the Mariana Trench.

Chicagoan Pat Arbor shared Fossett's love of adventure and followed his plans, which also included trying to fly a helicopter around the world. It may end up being used for hospital emergencies.

Back in September, it joined the search for the relentless adventurer, out for a casual sightseeing flight on a calm desert morning, a trip that should have been a welcome break before continuing his assault on the record books.

Right now, all of Fossett's adventures are up in the air. They are all still possible, but lacking Fossett's imagination and determination, not nearly as likely.
