Someone swiped a statue containing the remains of a prominent Chicago gay activist from an Uptown peace garden last weekend.
The statue, a replica of the Bird Girl sculpture that appeared on the cover of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, was part of a garden tribute created last year next to the Howard Brown Health Center, 4025 N. Sheridan Rd., honoring Mary York, an attorney, and Lisa Tonna. Both lesbian health advocates, they died within two weeks of each other in January 2008.
York's ashes were mixed in with the cement that anchored the 10-pound-to-20-pound resin piece.
Center staffers discovered it missing Monday morning.
"There's some very bad karma for whoever did this," said Paul Fairchild, the center's chief development officer.
A larger and heavier Buddha-like statue honoring Tonna remained.
