Bond Set At $25M For Stabbing Death Suspect
Michigan Man Accused Of Killing South Holland Man, Injuring 6-Month-Old Girl
MARKHAM, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Bond was set at $25 million Wednesday for a 19-year-old Michigan man charged with the fatal stabbing of a south suburban man that also left a 6-month-old girl hospitalized with stab wounds.
Eric Smith of Saginaw, Mich., is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
He appeared for a bond hearing Wednesday at the Markham courthouse, where Judge Darron Bowden set bond at $25 million, according to a release from the state's attorney's office.
Smith allegedly stabbed 29-year-old Fians Mannie to death at 959 E. 159th Pl. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m. Sunday, the Cook Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Police responded to a disturbance in the home at 6:20 p.m. in which there was an "unprovoked" attack on Mannie and his daughter, according to South Holland police.
According to the state's attorney's office, Smith attacked Mannie while Mannie was holding his daughter in his arms. Prosecutors said during the bond hearing that Smith slashed the baby in the face first, then stabbed Mannie multiple times until he dropped the baby, stumbled outside and fell.
Officers found Mannie outside the home with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso. The baby suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds.
The infant was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey and later transferred to Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, police said. She remains hospitalized Wednesday, according to the state's attorney's office.
Smith's next scheduled court appearance is at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19 in Markham for a preliminary hearing.
