1 Dead, 1 Critical After Fight Leads To Shooting

ROBBINS, Ill. (STNG) ― A verbal altercation turned deadly late Saturday in south suburban Robbins when one person left an argument only to return with a gun.

About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, three men were having a verbal dispute in the 3300 block of West 135th Street, Robbins police detective Darren Hatchet said.

Following the argument, one person returned and fired shots at 47-year-old Anthony Mathews and 52-year-old Robert Grigsby, Hatchett said.

Mathews was dead on the scene, and Grigsby was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Hatchett said. Grigsby remained hospitalized Sunday night.

The shooting happened near Grigsby's home and Hatchett said all men involved were over 40 years old, adding that the incident was not gang-related.

Police were talking to one "person of interest" Sunday, but no one had been charged in the slaying.

Mathews, of 13542 S. Trumbull Ave., died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The reason for the dispute was not known.
