2 Teens Injured, 1 Critically, In S. Side Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A male juvenile is in police custody for allegedly shooting two teens, 16 and 18, in a reported gang-related attack Monday night in the Southwest Side's Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
The suspect may be charged as an adult, Wentworth Area police said.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were shot about 8:10 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 65th Place.
"We were inside we were watching TV then we came out. My neighbors they went to call the police. We tried to help the guy up. They told me not to move him, so we didn't," said neighbor Ana Gonzalez.
Initially, the 16-year-old was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said the teen was shot in the back.
The teen was unable to talk to police early Monday, but Wentworth Area police said at 3:30 a.m. he was now in serious condition.
According to Langford, the 18-year-old was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where Taylor said he is in "stable" condition after being shot in the hand.
Chicago Lawn District police officers heard gunfire and saw a male allegedly brandishing a gun while responding to the area. When the male saw the officers he began running away and threw the gun before being captured by the officers, Wentworth Area police said.
The officers found the two teens in the street at 3229 W. 65th Pl., about a block and a half away from where they caught the suspect police said.
Wentworth Area police said detectives can not complete their investigation until they talk to the 16-year-old. However, police believe the incident may be gang-related because the victims and the suspect are allegedly in rival gangs.
Wentworth Area detectives are probing the shooting.
