1 Dead In South Side Fire

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A woman lost her life in an apparently accidental kitchen fire early Monday on the South Side.

A firefighter suffered a hand laceration while battling the blaze, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

An unidentified 25-year-old woman taken from the fire who was DOA at Provident Hospital of Cook County was pronounced dead at 4:45 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, which will not be performing an autopsy later Monday.

The fire started about 3:30 a.m. in a building at 614 E. 50th Pl., according to a police Bomb & Arson Unit detective.

The fire started in a kitchen on the first floor of the three-story building and was extinguished by 4:45 a.m. Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said.

The fire was contained to one unit of an apartment building at the 50th Place address, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said, citing preliminary reports.

A firefighter suffered a laceration to his hand while battling the fire, and he was treated for non life-threatening injuries, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.

The blaze was apparently accidental, according to a Wentworth District police lieutenant, who said 25-year-old woman killed lived in the unit where the fire burned.

Knight said it was too early to tell whether the fire was considered suspicious or what caused it. Greer said no one was displaced by the fire.

Though it was unknown immediately whether the apartment had working smoke detectors, firefighters will be canvassing the neighborhood where the fire occurred at 10 a.m. handing out literature and smoke detectors, according to Rosado.
