South Carolina is at the center of the Democratic race for president. The primary there is Saturday.
CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports from Myrtle Beach that the stakes are different for each of the three major candidates.
Former Sen. John Edwards mentions at nearly every stop that he was born in South Carolina. After three straight losses, he's now hoping his campaign could be reborn here with a strong showing Saturday. Otherwise, he could face elimination.
Once again, voter opinion surveys report Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has a significant lead on the strength of growing support among the African-Americans who comprise about half of South Carolina's Democratic primary voters. It's creating an expectation that Obama ought to win here, giving him a boost going into the next showdown, the Feb. 5 Super-Duper Tuesday primaries that will award more than 2,000 delegates to this summer's Democratic National Nominating Convention.
After narrow victories in New Hampshire and Nevada, Sen. Hillary Clinton claims momentum is back on her side. She's already taking steps to counter the damage done should Obama win big here in South Carolina.
On Monday, the Clinton campaign conducted a conference call to predict a big showdown in next week's primary in Florida, where the Democratic National Committee has ruled there won't be any delegates awarded. They raised the possibility that Clinton will do some campaigning in Florida and will try to reverse what could be the perception of a big loss in South Carolina by a win in Florida, although the Florida primary is not supposed to count for anything.
