Snow Arrives in Chicago Saturday Night

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Mild Thanksgiving temperatures are expected to move out of the area Saturday night, and snow flurries and frigid temperatures make the remainder of the weekend ideal for staying home and eating leftovers.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures will plummet into the 20s Saturday night and snow flurries will move into the Chicago area for the remainder of the holiday weekend.

Temperatures are expected to drop near 29 degrees Saturday night with an east wind gusting between 5 and 10 miles per hour. There is a 20 percent chance Chicago will see snow flurries before Sunday morning, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to climb near 37 degrees Sunday morning, but the mercury will fall and wind gusts will increase to 25 mph during the afternoon, the weather service said. There is a 90 percent chance of snow flurries by Monday morning, but new accumulation is expected to be less than an inch.

The flurries are expected to stop by noon Monday, but temperatures will only climb near 31 degrees. Frigid temperatures are expected to move in Monday night, as the mercury could dip as low as 14 degrees, the weather service said.

As possible snow accumulation and frigid temperatures mark the unofficial start of winter in Chicago, the Illinois Department of Transportation has provided the following tips to keep motorists safe:

During the 2008 winter season, more than 1,900 pieces of equipment will be deployed as needed to keep state routes clear and passable. Last year, IDOT spent about $86 million on snow removal efforts, the release said.
