Chicago To Ring In New Year With More Snow
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
First, Chicago was doused in a blanket of fog Monday morning, now there's a snow advisory in effect for the rest of New Year's Eve.
According to the CBS 2 WeatherTrak forecast, snow will begin to accumulate this afternoon and eveningjust around the time revelers begin to celebrate the New Year.
A low pressure system developing over the Central Plains will bring around 4 inches of snow over locations south of the Interstate 80 corridor.
Locations between Interstate 80 and Interstate 88 will see around 1 to 3 inches of total snowfall and locations farther north should only see light amounts, perhaps up to 1 inch.
Snow is expected to continue into the evening hours, before tapering off to light snow showers by around midnight.
Despite the white weather, the Federal Aviation Administration was reporting minimal delays on all flights at O'Hare and Midway airports, according to the FAA Web site.
Chicago has assigned the entire fleet of 272 snow plows to report to their individual routes so they'll be in position to deal with snow.
"We are likely to get some light snow this afternoon and we want to make sure that our roadways are in good shape to handle New Year's Eve traffic and an expected drop in temperatures," said Streets & Sanitation Commissioner Michael J. Picardi. "In addition to advising motorists to be extra cautious due to the weather conditions, we also want motorists to keep a safe distance from other vehicles tonight because it is New Year's Even and it can be hard to tell if other motorists have been drinking."
As the low pressure system moves off to the east, winds will shift northwesterly and become strong and gusty overnight. Blowing snow is likely after midnight and through the early morning hours. Wind chills will plummet to around zero.
A Snow Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
There was a freezing fog advisory for much of the Chicago area for much of the morning and early afternoon.
A freezing fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving, slow down and use your headlights.
