Advice For Men On How To Shop For Women

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The joy of the holiday season can often be dampened by the challenge of finding the perfect gift. And when it comes to shopping for women – men are often clueless. CBS 2's Vince Gerasole has some timely tips and advice from an expert.

Fellas, chances are the lovely lady in your life has received some not so lovely gifts - maybe from you.

Kyler Uphaus, a 20-something graphic designer, says she has received some awkward gifts over the years.

"Clothes that are three sizes too big, never a good thing," Uphaus said. "A pan - I like to cook but I already had one."

"Sometimes they'll wait until the last minute and that's when they get a little panicky," said Macy's personal shopper Frank Nichter. "Get out there and shop. It's there, it's on sale."

Frank Nichter is a Macy's personal shopper with advice on presents men should avoid.

"Do not get women sexy lingerie - they hate it," Nichter said. "They're thinking about themselves, they're not thinking about the woman in their life."

"Appliances, things that they have to use and work in the kitchen," Nichter said. "Anything that has to do with working means work."

Nichter says women shoppers crave warm, cozy, everyday sweaters and comfortable snuggly flannel pajamas.

And how are men supposed to know this?

"What's she like outside the house? What's her hobbies? What does her friends say?" Nichter said.

Get to know the unconventional Snake Roth and you'll get to know why a pearl necklace was not one of her favorite gifts.

"My name is Snake - pearl necklaces are not for me," Roth said.

She says she'd like to get power tools for the holidays. Snake says she didn't let the pearl necklace slip away; she kept it, because it's the thought that counts.

Nichter's final advice - be thoughtful. Chances are the lady in your life is sending out clues - do your best to read them.
