Shooting Sparks Residential Standoff

CICERO (CBS) ― Two teenage boys are in custody after raiding an apartment and barricading themselves inside after a Tuesday night shooting in west suburban Cicero.

About 8:15 p.m., a 16-year-old boy shot two people near the 1900 block of South 51st Avenue. The teenager and his 17-year-old male accomplice then ran into a first-floor apartment at 1904 S. 51st Ave., pushed the tenant out and barricaded themselves inside, said Cicero spokesman Dan Proft. The tenant was uninjured.

Cicero Police called the hostage team from the Cook County Sheriff's Police, which talked the teenagers out of the apartment about 1 a.m. Wednesday, Proft said. Police did not fire any shots.

The shooting that sparked the standoff left two males hospitalized -- one at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn with a gunshot wound to the leg and the other at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, Proft said. Ages and conditions were not immediately available.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related, Proft said.

The people in the area say the gang violence has them concerned to go places in their community.

"I worry every day," said resident Vickie Ivory. "You know, you can't go to the park safely so the kids can play because they fighting among each other from corner to corner."

Both teenagers -- who have not been charged as of 7 a.m. -- were in custody at the Cicero Police Department, Proft said.

Cicero detectives are investigating the incident - but have not yet announced charges in the case.
