A Minnesota man has been charged with possession of more than 900 grams of heroin after his sport-utility vehicle crashed into an Edgewater garage Nov. 14 on the North Side, police said.
Abel B. Zor, 37, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., was charged with felony manufacturing/delivery of more than 900 grams of heroin, police said.
Zor is the registered owner of an SUV that crashed into a garage in the 5800 block of North Magnolia Avenue on Nov. 14, police said.
Officers responded about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 to a report of shots fired at a vehicle in the 5800 block of North Broadway and found an unoccupied SUV had crashed into a brick garage at 5829 N. Magnolia Ave. -- about a block east of the reported shooting, police said.
Officers saw "containers that appeared suspicious inside the SUV" and called the Chicago Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said the night of the crash.
Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said the HazMat Team was contacted about 11 a.m. Nov. 15 for the "unmarked barrels," which turned out to be not dangerous.
Police said a large quantity of heroin was found in the back seat of the SUV.
Police located multiple people inside the SUV, who said somebody opened fired on their vehicle and they were attempting to flee when they crashed, police said. Zor, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, fled after the crash, police said.
Zor was arrested Tuesday when he walked into a police station and attempted to claim his SUV. He was immediately charged because the drugs were found in a vehicle registered to him, police said.
Court information was not immediately available.
