Police have arrested and charged a man reportedly armed with a cutting instrument who allegedly sexually assaulted a young woman in an alley early Tuesday in the South Side's Woodlawn neighborhood.
The man is also reportedly a suspect in another rape that occurred Oct. 8 in an apartment building in the Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood, according to a police source.
John Hopkins 33, of the 5200 block of South Hyde Park Boulevard, was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault in connection with two October rapes, police said.
Hopkins is expected to appear in Violence Court (Br. 66) for a bond hearing at noon Thursday in Cook County Criminal Court, 2600 S. California Ave., police said.
The most recent attack happened about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at 6335 S Rhodes Ave. when a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in an alley, Calumet Area police said. The man who attacked her was allegedly armed with a cutting instrument, which he did not use to injure the woman, police said.
The woman was taken to University of Chicago Hospitals, where her condition was not life-threatening.
The man is reportedly a suspect in the Oct. 8 rape of a woman in the 1300 block of East Hyde Park Boulevard, the source said.
In the Oct. 8 attack, the woman was talking to her boyfriend on a cell phone as she entered her apartment building when a man "came in behind her and grabbed her" about 10 p.m., the source said. The man implied he had a knife and allegedly told the woman he was going to kill her, but never showed the weapon.
The on-duty security guard thought they were together and the attacker walked the woman through the building, past the security desk and out the back door to an alley where he assaulted her, the source said.
The attacker fled the scene with the woman's purse, keys and driver's license, the source said. After the attack, the women told the guard what happened.
The woman was taken to University of Chicago Hospitals, the source said.
Video surveillance captured images of the suspect, police said after the attack.
