Five boys ranging from 11 to 15 years old were charged in connection with the vandalism at Southwood Middle School. Damages were estimated at $80,000.
Five boys between the ages of 11 and 15 have been arrested for vandalizing a south suburban middle school last weekend, causing an estimated $80,000 in damages.
Country Club Hills police announced the arrests Thursday morning. The boys told police they vandalized the Southwood Middle School at 18635 Lee St. on Saturday because "they were bored."
Four of the five boys attend Southwood. An 11-year-old is in the sixth grade, a 12-year-old is in the seventh grade and two 14-year-olds are in the eighth grade. The 15-year-old is a freshman at Rich Central High School. All the boys live in Country Club Hills.
Country Club Hills School District 160 Supt. Charlie Kent said he will recommend to the school board the four younger boys be expelled and held responsible for restitution of the damages.
Police have charged the four older boys with felony burglary and felony criminal damage to state-supported property. The 11-year-old boy was not charged because of his age, but was turned over to the custody of his parents.
Mayor Dwight Welch called the vandalism the worst he's ever seen in the city.
