School Nurse Faces Jail For Sex With Teen Boy

JOLIET, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Bolingbrook elementary school nurse faces a potential prison sentence after admitting she had sexual contact three years ago with a teenage boy.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 29 for 50-year-old Laura J. Obzera. She worked as a health assistant at Wood View Elementary School at 197 Winston Dr. in Bolingbrook.

Obzera, of 876 Bonnie Brae Lane in Bolingbrook, pleaded guilty Friday in Will County Circuit Court to a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, records showed.

Bolingbrook police began investigating Obzera in early September 2008, after being contacted by officials of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. DCFS workers asked police to look into "inappropriate text messages of a sexual nature" being sent between a teenage boy and an adult, later identified as Obzera, Bolingbrook police Cmdr. Tom Ross said last year.

Police subsequently interviewed Obzera and three teenage boys. Obzera was arrested Sept. 11, 2008, and charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one involving each of the youths. The abuse occurred in 2006, authorities said.

Ross said last summer police did not believe the abuse occurred on school property or that Obzera met her victims through her nursing work.

Two of the criminal charges were dismissed Friday in exchange for Obzera's guilty plea, according to court records.

Obzera had worked since 2001 for Valley View School District 365U, of which Wood View Elementary is part.

She was placed on administrative leave from her job following her arrest. It could not be learned Tuesday whether she remains employed by the district or has been dismissed.

Obzera remains free on bail.
