How To Save Money At Amusement Parks

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Going to an amusement park this summer? Not sure your wallet is up to the ride? There are ways to save money on admission. And save money once inside!

You know your family needs some fun time together, and an amusement park is just the ticket, but it's easy to spend a bundle there, so how can you save?

"We never walk into a theme park and pay the rack rate, we save money by clipping coupons, finding coupons anywhere we can," said Stephanie Garcia, amusement park visitor.

But there are even more savings to be had. Emily Kaufman is known as the "travel mom." She says the Internet is a great place to start.

"Whether you visit the park's website directly or the local visitor and convention bureau, you can oftentimes save money by purchasing more than one park at a time, taking advantage of park hopper passes," said Kaufman.

In some parks, visiting during the week or later in the day means lower rates. And always remember to check your connections for savings.

"You can take advantage of memberships with different organizations, whether its places like AAA or even your employer," Kaufman said.

And Kaufman says it's easy to keep costs low once you're in -- by using a few simple tricks.

"My suggestion is you have a hearty meal before you visit the theme park," Kaufman said. "And then take advantage of the offerings of kids' meals because those tend to be plenty of food and more value-oriented."

And don't forget to bring the other necessities with you.

"For example sunscreen, film, videotape: those things are a bit more costly inside the park," Kaufman said.

These are all helpful tips for the families looking for fun in these tight times.

"Anyway we can to save a dollar," Garcia said.

If you live close enough, a seasonal or annual pass may pay off -- if you plan to visit the park over and over.
