Man Charged In Deadly Shooting Of Officer's Son

Darius Walton Was Arrested Nov. 14

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Darius L. Walton, 23, is officially charged with murder for allegedly killing a Chicago Police officer's son at a fast food drive-through in October on the South Side.

Walton, of the 2200 block of South Christiana Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Oct. 6 fatal shooting of Ronald Heard, police News Affairs said. Walton was arrested in Benton Harbor, Mich., Nov. 14.

Walton is scheduled to appear at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse later Tuesday for a bond hearing, News Affairs said.

Heard, 23, was the son of a Chicago Police officer.

On Nov. 2, Rashad Johnson, 18, was indicted on two counts of murder, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said. Police said Johnson was not the gunman, but was involved in the shooting.

Heard was shot five times early Oct. 6 in a White Castle drive-thru at 6901 S. Western Ave., police said. Heard, of 8025 S. Richmond St., was pronounced dead hours later, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

About 4 a.m. Oct. 6, Heard was waiting in line at the drive-thru when a man approached his car and asked if he wanted to buy marijuana. Heard said "No" and watched the man approach another car and ask the female driver if she wanted to buy drugs, police said.

When the woman declined, the man violently grabbed her through the car window. When Heard went to help, the offender shot him twice in the chest, then three times after he fell. The man fled to a vehicle and drove away, police said.

Johnson pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in front of Judge Stanley Stacks, Simonton said.
