Teen Shot, Seriously Wounded In Rogers Park

Police: Victim Dropped Out Of Sullivan High School Because Of Pressures To Join Gang

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 15-year-old boy was seriously wounded by a masked gunman Tuesday night in a possibly gang-related shooting in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Police, citing preliminary information, said the wounded teen recently dropped out of high school because of pressures to join a gang.

A gunman wearing a ski mask exited a white minivan about 8:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Fargo Avenue. Before the shooting, he approached the boy and asked, "What's up folks," according to police, who were citing preliminary information.

It was not known how the teen responded to the question, which was asked to determine if he was affiliated with a certain gang, police said.

The gunman was apparently seeking to harm a rival gang-member. There is no indication the boy was involved in a gang and it was not known why he was targeted. However, the teen recently dropped out of Sullivan High School because of pressure to join a gang, police said.

The teenager was wounded in the thigh, left side of the body and the buttocks, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

After the shooting, the gunman got back into the minivan, which had another person inside, and it fled the scene, police said.

Nobody else was hurt.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating, but no one is in custody early Wednesday.
