No Charges For Robbins Cop In Deadly Shooting

CHICAGO (STNG) ― An off-duty Robbins police officer allegedly shot and killed his ex-wife's husband at his South Side home Sunday night after the husband was reportedly being "heavy handed" disciplining his kids.

The officer was released early Monday without being charged, police said.

Cornel McKinney, 35, of 6120 S. Langley Ave., was shot at his home, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. Pronouncement information was not immediately available. An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday.

About 8 p.m., police responded to a possible domestic-related shooting about at 6120 S. Langley, according to police News Affairs reports.

Upon arrival, police found McKinney's body on the sidewalk outside his Woodlawn apartment, Grand Crossing District police said.

McKinney was allegedly being "heavy-handed" disciplining his children, "waving his pistol around." In response, his wife, who also lives at the apartment, called her ex-husband, an off-duty Robbins police officer, who came to the apartment, Grand Crossing District police said.

The two men began arguing and McKinney claimed the officer had no right to tell him how to discipline his children and threatened the officer. He then allegedly put the pistol in the pants near the small of his back, but drew it again and allegedly pointed it at the off-duty officer, Grand Crossing District police said.

McKinney's distraught wife called 911, but the off-duty officer allegedly shot McKinney four times. He suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen area, Grand Crossing District police said.

Prior to the shooting, the cop announced he was an officer, police News Affairs said.

The wife and the off-duty police officer's teenage daughter, who lives with McKinney and his wife, witnessed the shooting, according to Grand Crossing District police.

Nobody else was injured and it was unknown where the children were at the time of the shooting.

The off-duty officer was released without being charged following an investigation by Calumet Area detectives, police News Affairs said.
