Robbery Victim: Criminals May Be Exposed To HIV

GARY, Ind. (CBS) ― A group of thieves beat a man in Gary, Ind. and then swiped his moped.

Now, the victim is speaking out because the criminals may have exposed themselves to HIV during the fight.

The victim spoke exclusively with CBS 2 Sunday night, as CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.

He says he's had HIV for the past 20 years and was diagnosed with AIDS last year.

His parents had recently bought him the moped; his only form of transportation.

He says he had been to a casino in Gary on July4 and was on his way home when he stopped at a gas station on U.S. 20 near the Miller area.

A man approached him and ordered him off the moped.

He says that man and two others began punching and kicking him.

In the end, about five men were involved in beating the alleged victim, stealing the moped and leaving the scene in a maroon van.

They left with his blood all over them.

He says he's not interested in getting the moped back at this point.

He wants the suspects to get tested for HIV because they may be putting countless others at risk.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Gary Police.
