Suspect: 'I Don't Deal Drugs ... I Rob People'
VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A man caught driving with cocaine has pleaded guilty, but not to dealing drugs.
Shannon Mallory, 27, pleaded Monday to a lesser charge of aiding in the possession of a narcotic drug, which carries a maximum prison sentence of eight years in prison.
He originally faced 20 to 50 years on possession of a narcotic with intent to deliver. He's scheduled to be sentenced July 27.
Mallory has maintained his innocence of knowledge of the drug since his initial hearing Aug. 18 and asked why he was incarcerated while his passenger, Trell Houston, 28, of Chicago, was not.
"I rob people. I do not sell drugs or anything like that," Mallory said in court.
Houston was sentenced to 30 years in prison on June 22 after he was found guilty of possession with intent to deliver a narcotic in a May 4 trial before Porter County Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford.
Houston and Mallory were arrested Aug. 15 after a traffic stop on U.S. 30 in Valparaiso.
Police brought a police dog in after the officer who stopped their car smelled burning marijuana.
Although Mallory handed the police a cigarette with marijuana in it, the dog found 88 grams of cocaine in a vacuum-sealed bag under the dashboard on the driver's side.
