Rezko Wants Clout List Barred From Evidence
Attorney: Rezko's Charges Have Nothing To Do With State Hiring Practices
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Lawyers for indicted businessman and political fund-raiser Tony Rezko are asking a federal judge to bar from Rezko's fraud trial extensive lists of hiring recommendations made by political figures to Gov. Blagojevich's administration.
"There is no connection between the state hiring process and the charged scheme to control" two state government boards, Rezko lawyer Mariah E. Moran wrote in a motion to U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve.
Moran noted that federal prosecutors have submitted as evidence 26 pages that list people Rezko and other political figures apparently wanted placed in the governor's administration.
Those lists show that hundreds of people, including Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama and State Senate President Emil Jones recommended people for state jobs and appointments to state boards and commissions.
The feds -- in a separate investigation -- have been looking at the hiring practices in Blagojevich's administration. The governor has not been charged.
