The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a serial bank robber dubbed "The Red Line Robber" who is believed responsible for robbing at least six Chicago banks.
The most-recent robbery occurred about 5 p.m. Friday at the Chase Bank branch at 850 S. Wabash St., according to FBI spokesman Ross Rice.
According to witnesses, the robber entered the bank armed with a handgun and forced the branch manager to accompany him to the teller counter, Rice said in an e-mail.
The robber threatened both employees with physical harm if his demands were not met, according to Rice, who said the robber then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect, considered armed and dangerous, has been described by witnesses as a male, 30 to 35, 6 feet to 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds with a medium build and beard. He has worn sunglasses, a dark colored baseball cap and a black bomber jacket during all of his robberies, according to a release from the Chicago FBI.
Authorities dubbed him the "Red Line Robber" because all of his heists have occurred at bank branches located in close proximity to stops on the CTA Red Line, leading investigators to believe he is riding a train to and from the banks.
He is also suspected of five other robberies including the:
-- Chase Bank branch at 340 N. State St. on Dec. 5 and March 10;
-- North Community Bank branch at 5342 N. Broadway and the Bank of America branch at 7900 S. Halsted on Jan. 23; and
-- MB Financial Bank branch at 6443 N. Sheridan Rd., also on March 10.
Anyone with information should contact the Chicago FBI at (312) 421-6700.
