Remembering Randy Salerno's Gift Of Wit

CHICAGO (CBS) ― One of the reasons it's so hard for us here at CBS 2 to believe Randy Salerno is gone is that he was such a larger than life personality – and not just because of his height of nearly 6 1/2 feet.

Few in the newsroom could make you laugh as hard as Randy. He'd have you cracking a smile in an instant with just a one-liner he'd throw you in the hallway.

So as we come to terms with this loss, we can't stop thinking about what made him so special.

CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman has a look at how Randy kept us laughing.

His infectious laugh, quick wit and laid back attitude made him special, and yet he was always professional and terrific at what he did. He made it look effortless, and it was no secret – he loved what he did.

When you met Randy, you had to like him. Humor is a gift and he had it in spades.

News can be a serious business, but no matter what, Randy always made his co-workers and the people watching laugh – whether taking part in a daredevil demonstration, lobbing baseballs to the Cubs' Derrek Lee, or showing us one of the many hilarious video clips he found online.

But for Randy, it wasn't just about TV. He was a family man. You often heard stories about his wife Irene, and their three beautiful kids, and he shared that excitement with everyone.

He made everyone working in the newsroom feel like family too.

And people also always knew how generous he was. If there was a cause to donate to, especially one that concerned kids, he gave because it touched his heart. He was also a great listener, and that is what made him a great journalist.
