Suburban Park District Honors Randy Salerno

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The Parks and Recreation Department in Crystal Lake is honoring a native son, our late colleague Randy Salerno.

The board Thursday night approved a proposal to rename the baseball diamond at Lippold Park. It will now be called the Randy Salerno Memorial Field.

A group of friends from Salerno's softball league raised the money for a new scoreboard, complete with a nod to Jimmy Buffett, one of Salerno's favorite musicians.

His friends called it a fitting tribute to a real down to earth guy.

"He's the type of guy you could bust chops, you know, just one of the guys," said Salerno's friend Randy Funk. "He liked the Cubs and we're all Cubs fans. Just one of the guys."

Salerno's friends are also organizing a charity golf outing this summer, the proceeds of which will help establish a college scholarship for journalism students.
