President-elect Barack Obama may not be the only Illinois politician going to the White House in January.
The Congressional newspaper Roll Call reported Wednesday morning that U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) will accept a job as Obama's chief of staff.
Emanuel's office told CBS 2 they "cannot confirm" reports that he has been offered and accepted the position. Some media outlets are reporting that he has accepted the job Wednesday afternoon.
Emanuel represents the city's North Side and is the fourth highest ranking Democrat in the House. He was chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign committee in 2006 and is credited with helping lead the Democrats back into the majority in the House that year.
Emanuel was elected to Congress in 2002, when Rod Blagojevich left Congress to run successfully for Illinois governor. Before he went to Congress, Emanuel was a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton.
Emanuel was reelected to his Congressional seat in a landslide Tuesday, winning 157,851 votes, or 74 percent of the vote, compared with 46,945 votes, or 22 percent for Republican Tom Hanson, and 8,618 votes, or 4 percent, for Green Party candidate Alan Augustson.
