'Ragtime' To Go Ahead In Wilmette After All

Offensive Language In Musical Led To Cancellation Of Performance

WILMETTE, Ill. (AP) ― Officials in north suburban Wilmette say the musical "Ragtime" can now go ahead -- a week after they canceled its showing at an outdoor park theater.

Wilmette Park District officials had expressed concern about potentially offensive language in the musical about turn-of-the-century America.

They said people in the park who hadn't come specifically to see the show might overhear that language.

But they have now agreed to let performers use a community recreation center.

The Park District's executive director, Thomas Grisamore, says officials never wanted to stop the musical from playing in Wilmette. They just didn't think it should be outside.

The production's director, Ty Perry, says he's thrilled the show can now be performed the way it was written.
