A city leader is calling for the resignation of the mayor of Racine, Wis., who was arrested on tentative charges of attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child, child enticement and other related counts.
Common Council President David Maack says Gary Becker needs to devote his time and energy to defending himself and it would be in the best interest of the city for Becker to resign.
Maack is handling the mayor's duties in his absence. He says if Becker does not resign, the council will meet to consider its next step.
Racine County District Attorney Michael Nieskes was expected to file formal charges against Becker Thursday.
He was apprehended on tentative charges of attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child, child enticement and possession of child pornography.
Authorities say Becker also could face charges of exposing a child to harmful materials, using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and misconduct in public office.
The mayor was released from the Kenosha County Jail Wednesday evening after bond was posted. His bond had been set at $165,000.
State agents arrested Becker at the Brookfield Square Mall in Brookfield, Wis., Tuesday evening.
