Many Dogs Found At Puppy Mill Still Await Adoption

Several Shelters Received Dogs Found At West Englewood House

CHICAGO (CBS) ― New homes have been found for some of the puppies found living in squalor in a suspected puppy mill on the city's South Side, while others remain up for adoption.

On Tuesday, the puppies were seized from a home at 6440 S. Bell Ave. in the West Englewood neighborhood, where they were crammed into small cages without food or water, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The puppies were taken to several shelters – the Animal Welfare League, 6224 S. Wabash Ave.; PAWS Chicago, 1997 N. Clybourn Ave.; and Save-A-Pet, 31664 N. Fairfield Rd. in Grayslake. Also receiving dogs were the Anti-Cruelty Society, 157 W. Grand Ave.; the Hinsdale Humane Society, 22 N. Elm St., Hinsdale; and Petropolis, 503 S. Lakeside Ct., Round Lake. Some dogs were also adopted directly from the Chicago Animal Care and Control office, 2741 S. Western Ave.

As of Friday morning, all 14 puppies taken to the Animal Welfare League had been adopted. PAWS had yet to begin giving out their dogs for adoption, and they say that adult dogs will be available on Monday and puppies in a few weeks.

PAWS has delayed the adoptions because of concerns over possible diseases and their need for a full medical exam.

As of Wednesday, the dogs seemed to be adjusting well to their new lives with plenty of food and water, and PAWS Chicago staff say that with a little TLC from the right family, their road to recovery should be pretty smooth.

To adopt from PAWS, you'll have to go to the Clybourn Avenue facility wherem you must fill out an application and be interviewed. PAWS Chicago will then decide if you are a good fit, and if you are, you may be able to leave that same day with the dog of your choice.

PAWS Chicago says because so many people are interested in adopting these dogs, they will be updating their website regularly with information on them.

Save-A-Pet said on their Web site that they took dogs "that the other shelters didn't want," including a 10-year-old male dog with few teeth and a min pin that was "a little naughty."

The dogs adopted by Save-A-Pet willl be in quarantine for the next 7 to 10 days, and they will be available next Thursday at the earliest. It is not certain how many dogs Save-A-Pet has.

Petropolis has three puppies, and they will not be adopted out for a couple weeks.

When police raided the house on Tuesday, the puppies were reportedly being sold out of the house at up to $475 a piece by 38-year-old Demetria Newell. She was charged with 67 counts of animal cruelty, and her boyfriend, 37-year-old David Hayes, is in even more trouble, was charged with felony marijuana possession after drugs, a handgun and $3,000 in cash were discovered.
