First Round Of Layoffs Hits Chicago Public Schools
More Than 550 Non-Classroom Employees To Be Cut
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
The first round of layoffs at the Chicago Public Schools begins Wednesday.
More than 550 non-classroom administrative employees will lose their jobs in this round of layoffs.
In total, CPS plans to lay off up to 1,000 non-classroom employees under a reorganization plan.
About half the layoffs will hit central office 27 percent of employees there while another 500 will be cut from citywide positions over the next year, spokeswoman Monique Bond told CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman last month.
"We do not want to cut classroom programs, teachers, or educational programs, and so in order to meet this deficit, we're going to have to make cuts somewhere," Bond said on June 10, "and the most logical place to do that without compromising or interrupting education would be from the administration."
But everyone from janitors to management may be affected, Bond said last month.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the cuts are expected to save CPS up to $100 million.
Another round of layoffs is expected in the summer.
CPS is said to have a budget deficit of between $475 million and $600 million.
