Man Struck, Killed By Truck At Produce Market
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A man was killed when he was struck by a semi truck that was backing up in the dock area of the Chicago International Produce Market in the Pilsen neighborhood Tuesday morning.
Didier Alzate, in his 50s, was in the street when he was struck by a semi truck at the produce market, at 2404 S. Wolcott Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m., when a truck driver backed up and apparently didn't see the man, according to an Ogden District police sergeant.
The accident took place in a dock area of the wholessale produce market, according to the sergeant.
The Chicago International Produce Market is the successor to the South Water Market, which was eliminated from its location near 14th Street between Racine and Morgan streets in 2003 to make way for the University Commons loft condo development.
The police Major Accident Investigations Unit is probing the accident and investigators remain on the scene at 7:30 a.m.
