6-Years For Pregnant Woman Accused Of Slashing

Tonjanice Mercedes Due To Deliver Baby Tuesday

CROWN POINT, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A pregnant 19-year-old northwest Indiana woman, due to deliver her baby on Tuesday, has been sentenced to six years in prison for slashing her cousin's face with a box cutter.

Tonjanice Mercedes Thurman-Smith of Gary pleaded guilty to battery on May 20, according to a release Monday from the Lake County (Ind.) Prosecutor's office. She was sentenced to two years probation to follow the prison term.

On Aug. 28, 2008, Thurman and her 21-year-old female cousin were together at their grandmother's home in Gary when they became involved in an argument. Thurman-Smith was upset that earlier in the day her boyfriend showed up at the home with a stolen car and the cousin called police.

Thurman-Smith got a box cutter and slashed her cousin across the face from the left side of the forehead to her eye and down the cheek, down her left arm and across her abdomen, the release said.

The facial injury, which required 17 staples to close, significantly and permanently scarred the victim, the release said. The abdominal wound required nine staples to close.

Thurman-Smith is scheduled to deliver her baby Tuesday, the release said.
