A postal carrier in northwest Indiana says she won't let rain, snow or a dog bite stop her from delivering the mail.
She was back at work just one day after a dog pushed the gate open at its home and attacked.
As CBS 2 Northwest Indiana Bureau Chief Pamela Jones reports, Danielle Lawrence had only been on the job for seven weeks when a dog pounced on her while she was delivering mail Monday on Wicker Avenue in Highland.
Police say the dog was an American Pit bull mix.
"I pulled my bag up and I started macing him and he just didn't want to let loose," Lawrence said.
A neighbor happened to be backing out of her driveway at the time and saw the attack.
"And all of a sudden, he jumped on her and knocked her to the pavement," Jo-An Michniewicz said. "He had hold of her backside; he was biting her. And she was crying and screaming and frightened.
"So I just aimed my car at the dog and opened the window and hollered get out of here. And the dog ran."
Lawrence was grateful, and got into Michniewicz. She was later taken to a hospital for treatment
"If it wasn't for her I probably would have been really torn up," Lawrence said.
She went back to work the day after the attack, and says she is sore.
Lawrence's boss is impressed with her dedication, and says it's a case that serves as a reminder for pet owners.
"We try to stress that all dogs be secure, especially during delivery hours," said Highland Post Office Acting Supervisor Edlin Smith.
Police say they cited the dog's owner for having a dog running loose and that the owner will have to appear before a judge.
The violation could carry a fine of up to $1,500.
