Cops Say They're Less Aggressive Because Of Weis
Department Spokeswoman: No Evidence Of Officer Slowdown
CHICAGO (AP) ―
Some Chicago Police say fear that their boss will second guess them has officers working the streets less aggressively than they once did.
A drop in the number of arrests suggests to some that officers are not showing the same initiative as they did before Supt. Jody Weis arrived early this year.
A major reason Weis was hired was to repair the reputation of a department damaged by allegations of officer misconduct. Some officers worry he's more interested in cleaning up the department than fighting crime.
Department spokeswoman Monique Bond says there is no evidence of any officer slowdown. She suggests overall arrests have dropped because police are focusing more on serious crime than offenses like disorderly conduct.
