Northwest Side Police Station Loses Power

Loss Results From ComEd's 'Routine Repairs'

CHICAGO (STNG) ― About 2,300 Northwest Side Commonwealth Edison customers -- including the Shakespeare District police station -- were in the dark for more than an hour Tuesday night after a power outage during "routine" repairs.

About 2,300 customers between California and Kedzie avenues and Palmer Street and Wrightwood Avenue were without power between 9:48 p.m. and 11:11 p.m. while crews performed "routine repairs," according to ComEd spokesman Luis Diaz.

Diaz said media reports of a transformer explosion were incorrect and stressed that crews were simply doing repairs.

"It was totally dark for a while," according to Shakespeare District police Capt. Marc Buslik, who said officers in the station at 2150 N. California Ave. used flashlights for light.

The captain said there are manual keys to the jail cells in the station. "We were able to monitor our prisoners," Buslik said.

Buslik said all the computers were down and the station did not have any backup power. No major police issues were affected, but arrest and case report processing -- performed by computer -- were delayed.

"There were no life-safety issues," the captain said.
