Parolee, Possible Police Shooting Suspect Charged

Kenneth Brown Charged With Being Armed Habitual Criminal

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Charges have been filed against a parolee police called a "possible suspect" in a police involved shooting at a hot dog stand Monday afternoon on the Far South Side.

Kenneth Brown, of the 7100 block of S. South Chicago Ave., who police said was a "possible suspect" in the incident that occurred Monday at 3 p.m. at Jim's Original hot dog stand, 16 E. 95th St., was arrested because he fit the general description of the offender.

Brown, 42, of was charged at 11:12 p.m. Tuesday with being an armed habitual criminal, a class X felony, according to police who said it remained unknown early Wednesday whether Brown was the shooter for several reasons.

Ballistics tests from the recovered weapon, DNA tests from the ski mask the suspect wore, and gunshot residue examinations were not completed yet and the officer could not positively identify Brown.

Police said Brown was convicted in 1994 for an armed robbery, sentenced to 30 years and was on parole for it at the time of his arrest Tuesday at 9337 S. Wabash Ave.

The incident began when a man wearing a ski mask walked up to a customer window on the east side of the building, produced a handgun and announced he was robbing the place, according to police.

A clerk there said, "Don't you see the police right there,'' and pointed to the west side of the building where the uniformed officer, who was coming back from court duty, was at another widow, according to police.

The clerk ducked while the attempted robber fired a shot and the officer returned fire while around the other side of the building.

"They start blasting each other,'' police said of the exchange of gunfire.

The would-be robber ran away and it remained unclear whether he was injured or not. He did not get away with anything and no one else, including the male officer, suffered injuries.

Police recovered the ski mask in a nearby alley and have submitted it as well as the weapon to the Illinois State Police crime lab for testing.
