Apparent Police Chase Ends In Fiery Crash

CHICAGO (STNG) ― One suspect is in custody and police are seeking two others after a reported police chase began on the Near South Side when shots were fired at people. The incident ended with a sport-utility vehicle bursting into flames after it crashed on the South Side early Monday.

The incident began about 2:30 a.m. in the Central District police jurisdiction and ended near the intersection of East 79th Street and South Stony Island Avenue, according to Central District police.

"There were shots fired in the [Central] district at people," according to Central District police Capt. Joe Boisso. "No one was hit,'' by bullets or injured during the incident, the captain said.

The incident began at 2025 S. Indiana Ave., in the Central District, according to a South Chicago District police sergeant.

The incident ended about 3 a.m. when a Cadillac Escalade rammed into a concrete embankment to the Skyway on Stony Island just south of 79th Street, according to a South Chicago District police sergeant. After it crashed, it burst into flames, and the driver jumped out and "took off running,'' on East 79th Street from Stony Island, the sergeant said. Police captured him down the street from where the Cadillac crashed, according to the sergeant.

Police have one person in custody and are looking for two others in connection to the crash as of 3:20 a.m., according to Banks. He said police spotted the vehicle involved in the crash and alerted police in the area to be on the lookout for two "offenders."

State police were on the scene of the crash assisting Chicago police, a State Police District Chicago trooper said.

Banks said they were not notified of injuries that required hospitalizations as of 3:20 a.m.
