Police Launch New South Side Athletic Program
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Chicago Police announced Saturday a new athletic program initiative to help South Side children ages 11 to 14 transition between grades.
The Chicago Police Department, Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS), Target Corporation and Chicago Indoor Sports announced the Cops Interaction Targeting Youth (CITY) program Saturday morning at Chicago Indoor Sports, 3900 S. Ashland Ave., police said.
Chicago Police officers and volunteers from the Wentworth, Grand Crossing, Deering and Prairie police districts will recruit and coach students from those districts for a weekly sporting event. Chicago Indoor Sports provides stadium space and Target provides uniforms and equipment, according to a Chicago Police release.
The students will begin by playing flag football and the sport will change every seven weeks, the release said.
"This program provides youth with an opportunity to participate in organized sports to promote positive relationships with peers and mentors," Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said. "It teaches children to successfully achieve, while helping them stay in school and out of trouble with adult supervision and support."
Target also donated an additional $14,600 to be used for community projects, police said.
