Dogs Rescued From Floods Will Be Up For Adoption

PAWS Chicago Takes In Dogs Rescued From Flood Waters In Iowa And Illinois

CHICAGO (CBS) ― From the rising Midwest flood waters to a warm, safe home here in Chicago -- more than a dozen rescued dogs will soon be up for adoption -- thanks to a road trip by some volunteers from PAWS Chicago.

The dogs arrived at PAWS Chicago's Intake Center on west 26th Street Tuesday afternoon.

"Oh there they are, aren't they cute?" said an onlooker.

They arrived by van and were unloaded, one by one, tails wagging.

The dogs are from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, site of massive flooding.

One dog is said to have been found floating in the water. His owners -- if he had any -- were never found. As for the other dogs, many of them did have owners, but their owners gave them up.

"They would come in and say 'We've lost our home, there's no way we can keep our pets, we just want them to get a good family'," said Paula Fasseas, PAWS Chicago.

Some of the dogs are said to be "stressed out", but others seemed pretty content, just happy to get a scratch.

"So they come up, bring 'em here and give 'em water, do a quick med exam," said Cynthia Buczko volunteer. "Tomorrow, spayed and neutered. Hopefully by the weekend, up for adoption."

Besides the Iowa dogs, PAWS was also expecting a van load of dogs from Quincy, Ill. tonight.

Volunteer Marian Oliva said the dogs don't seem to mind the car ride.

"Dogs were good, I was surprised," Oliva said. "Not too much accidents in the car."

The dogs will be up for adoption on Saturday at PAWS Chicago's Adoption Center in Lincoln Park at 1997 N. Clybourn Ave. For more information, call (773) 935-PAWS or visit www.pawschicago.org.
