1 Dead, 2 Hurt When Chased Car Hits Tree

Police Were Pursuing Suspicious Vehicle Before Wreck

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― One man is dead and two others are in serious-to-critical condition after the car they were in rolled and struck a tree during a police pursuit early Wednesday on the Near West Side.

Harrison District police were notified just before 5 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle in the 1100 block of South Karlov Avenue and told the occupants were possibly breaking into other vehicles, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

Officers saw two men in their 20s inside the car and another man, also in his 20s, outside the car looking at parked vehicles. When police attempted to question the men, the man looking at the parked vehicles entered the car, which sped away at a high rate of speed, Perez said.

The officers pursued the car, which entered the eastbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) and exited at Paulina Street, Perez said.

The pursuit ended when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree at 1654 W. Congress Parkway -- near the Paulina Street exit, Perez said.

Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said three people were taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County from the rollover crash.

Perez said one of the passengers was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:51 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death, but the man's identity was not being released as of 8 a.m.

The driver is facing multiple traffic violations, and could be charged for the death of the passenger, police said. No charges have been filed as of 8 a.m., and ticket information was not immediately available at 8 a.m.

Police recovered about 10 car stereos from the back of the crashed car, Perez said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
